The Brooklyn Bridge suffers from fragmented multi-agency oversight. As a result, we're left with environmental concerns for the ecosystem of the East River, vulnerabilities to the structural integrity of the bridge, and serious safety risks for cyclists, motorists, & pedestrians.

The Brooklyn Bridge is a historic symbol of our city's connectivity; it should also be a place of safety.
It is heartbreaking that since 8 July 2026, three individuals have attempted to or jumped from the Brooklyn Bridge. With understanding that long-term solutions require addressing deep systemic and mental health roots, we need immediate municipal action to ensure that basic safety information and crisis resources are deployed directly on the bridge.
Clear, restore, and maintain all emergency call box signage, ensuring they are fully visible and unobstructed.
Install high-visibility, permanent suicide prevention signage featuring 24/7 crisis resources (such as 988) at regular intervals along the pedestrian walkway.
Evaluate additional physical or operational safety measures to deter further tragedies on this landmark.
Although NYC DOT owns & operates the bridge, surrounding landscape components fall under DSNY, NYC Parks, and the NYPD. Without clear and enforced roles, maintenance issues slip through jurisdictional gaps and compound into bigger problems over time.
In 2021, the bike lane was relocated to the roadway level to eliminate dangerous overcrowding. Despite a 2024 ban on vending, vendors have surpassed the footprint of the bike lane. Gridlock can make the pedestrian path impassable for those with mobility-aids.
In 2016, a bridge wire snapped, turning "love locks" into missles that flew down to the traffic below. Current removal efforts can't keep up with the volume of locks left by tourists. Unchecked lock weight continues to threaten the lives of drivers & cyclists.
The bridge was once called "Times Sq. in the sky", but current sanitation efforts do not scale. Times Sq. sanitation works 24/7, but Brooklyn Bridge pedestrians see overflowing trash bins and motorists, cyclists, & the East River ecosystem hope debris doesn't blow down.
